Gala Details
Held Sunday night, September 29, 2002, at SAC’s McAllister Auditorium, with a reception catered by La Madeleine following the awards.
2002 Jasmina Wellinghoff Award for Special Contribution to the Theatre presented to George Burnette, University of the Incarnate Word, by last year’s recipient, Allan S. Ross, SAC and SAC Summer Company. George’s acceptance speech was followed by a surprise appearance (via videotape) from long-time friends Joe Sears and Jaston Williams who were in town last week doing GREATER TUNA at the Majestic.
MC’s and presenters of awards were Mary Denman and Phil Kazen, assisted by the ATAC “Globe Girl,” Jan O’Neill.
Total of 58 awards in 25 categories, plus the following special awards:
Special Award Presentations from ATAC to Ayn Phillips, creator of the SATCO E-Auditions weekly online newsletter (www.satheatre.com/e-auditions.htm), and Diana Brown, creator and webmaster of the SATCO website, www.satheatre.com and creator of the SATCO Playbill, weekly online newsletter (http://www.satheatre.com/playbill/).
John Igo presented “Remembrances” in honor of those members of the San Antonio Theatre community who died during the past season: Marianna Blase, Joe Leard, Bobbie Baer, and Julie Black.
Award presentations were accompanied by sound and slide examples of each award recipient’s work, designed by Rick Malone.
This year ATAC initiated special invitational opportunities for the individual theatres to publicly acknowledge the support of a valued volunteer.
The Following Presentations were made:
Missy Miller, Artistic Director of the Josephine Theatre presented to Ray Cook and Terry Bailey
Paul Riddle, Jr., Treasurer and Marketing Director of the Renaissance Guild presented to Ms. Hercule.
Executive Director Di Ann Sneed, San Pedro Playhouse presented to Janet Neuenschwander.
Ken Frazier, Director, the Sheldon Vexler Theatre presented to Kevin Stephenson, Kimberly Stephenson, and Melissa Cunningham..."The Three Amigos"
Entertainment included “It’s a Hard Knock Life” from the Josephine’s production of ANNIE; “The Ballad of Mack the Knife,” with members of the original cast from the Sheldon Vexler Theatre production of THE THREEPENNY OPERA; a scene from SWEET NOTHING IN MY EAR with the SAC student cast speaking and signing; the musical number “Take the ‘Tex’ Out of Texas” from the Josephine Theatre production of Tom Masinter’s original musical GONE TO TEXAS with Pete Sanchez reprising his role as Captain Tenorio, and “Day by Day” from the Renaissance Guild production of GODSPELL.
