Code of Ethics for Adjudicators


In order to maintain objective criteria for adjudicators ATAC requests that the following Code of Ethics will be maintained:


  1. Judges will NOT judge any production in which they are a part of the production.     

  2. Judges will NOT adjudicate any production in which there are family members, relatives,
    or current students.

  3. Judges will NOT adjudicate any production in which they are a member of the
    company's board of directors.

  4. Artistic Directors, Co-Artistic Directors or production company administrators will not
    be eligible to adjudicate any production.

  5. Judges will recuse themselves from adjudicating a production if they have any bias
    (moral and/or ethical) toward the selection or the content of a play.  Judges will recuse themselves from adjudicating a production if they have ANY bias
    toward the production or the production company.

  6. Judges will maintain a low profile at the productions they attend. Judges are asked not to
    identify themselves as ATAC judges to other theatre patrons, to members of the
    company, or to media representatives.

  7. Judges will not discuss their ratings with actors, directors, company administrators, or
    other ATAC judges.

  8. Judges will not discuss their opinions with other judges unless the other judges have seen
    the production and turned in their ballot.

** Any judge found not abiding by the Code of Ethics will be dismissed and their ballots not counted. If this dismissal is result in elimination of a production then consideration will be on a case by case basis.


Code of Ethics for Board Members


  1. Board members cannot also be adjudicators.

  2. Board members cannot know the individual judge's ratings of any production. Only the
    CPA who is hired by the Board will know the identity of a judge and their ratings. All judges will be given a code number and that number will not be available to the Board. If a judge needs to be replaced, only the President of the organization will be able to obtain the name of the judge from the CPA in order to take appropriate action. Board members will be allowed to view spread sheets at the end of a theatre season to determine overall ratings of productions and individual actors/technicians. Only the Judges’ code numbers will appear on this spread sheet.

The purpose of the Alamo Theatre Arts Council (ATAC) is to recognize and celebrate the work of San Antonio theatre artists; to generate visibility and excitement for locally produced theater; to stimulate and encourage the pursuit of excellence in artistic and production standards; and to educate audiences in discovering the riches of the thespian arts.
