2024 Jasmina Wellinghoff Award for Special Contribution to the Theatre

2023-2024 Recipient, Charles Falcon: Retired educator, director, actor

Mr. Falcon retired in 2022 after 38 years teaching in the Department of Theatre and Speech Communication at San Antonio College. He earned his undergraduate degree in Theatre from Oberlin College in Oberlin Ohio and received his Master of Arts degree in Theatre and Speech Communication from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti Michigan. Mr. Falcon is a theatre educator, director, and actor who has had the pleasure of educating, and working with many of San Antonio’s local theatre professionals.

One of Mr. Falcon’s greatest contributions to local theatre has been introducing the magic of theatre to students from across our city. His student’s number in the thousands and many have gone on to pursue careers in performing arts and related fields, including acting, directing, teaching, school administrators, fine arts coordinators, and countless theatre aficionados. He helped conceive the San Antonio College High School Production Program where thousands of high school and middle school theatre students visit S.A.C. bi-annually to watch a fully staged theatrical production. In many cases this is the first time these students have ever witnessed a fully staged show. He has worked extensively with high school theatre companies throughout San Antonio, South Texas, and the state of Texas. Mr. Falcon has directed in San Antonio for the past 30 years with his productions earning numerous nominations and ATAC and Globe Awards. He was honored to receive a Best Direction nomination last year for his work on The Ghost of Lote Bravo with Teatro Audaz.

Charles is a former SA Ballet and ATAC Board Member and former ATAC Judge. He is also an active member of the Texas Educational Theatre Association and the Texas Adjudicator’s Association. He has been a Theatre Adjudicator for the University Interscholastic League One Act Play contest since 1992 where he has judged every level, including the State Contest in 2006, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2024. He was honored to be named Educator of the Year, Community College Division, in January 2005.

Charles is a past recipient of the NISOD Excellence in Teaching Award (1999 & 2001) and participated in the Oxford University Round Table at Oxford University in the summer of 2007. In 2011 he was selected as a finalist for the Minnie Piper Stevens “Piper Professor”. In 2013 he was honored to receive the Constance Allen Heritage for Lifetime Learning “Yellow Rose of Texas” award and was named the Robert E. Ziegler ‘Inspirational Professor’ in the spring of 2015. He is honored to be recognized for the Jazmina Wellinghoff Award this year.
