Updates to the ATAC Judge Application Process

To improve transparency, fairness, and consistency in our awards process, ATAC has updated how we select judges.

What’s New:

  • New Selection Process:
Instead of accepting judge applications year-round, we now select a dedicated group of 40 judges through a recommendation and review process.
  • Annual Recruitment:
Judges are selected once per year, with recruitment taking place in July for the upcoming season.
  • One-Year Terms:
Each year, a new panel of 40 judges will be chosen to ensure a balanced and refreshed perspective.
  • Focus on Diversity and Balance:
This new approach allows us to build a panel that reflects a wide range of theatre professionals and community supporters.
  • Easier Oversight:
A consistent and focused group is easier to manage and train, allowing us to better support judges and ensure consistency across productions.
  • Commitment to Growth:
We’ll continue to evaluate and improve the process based on feedback and outcomes each season.

How Judges Are Selected

The ATAC Judging Affairs Subcommittee reviews all applicants prior to each season. Judges are selected based on eligibility, experience, and a demonstrated commitment to supporting local theatre.

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered, applicants must:

  • Be a full-time resident of the San Antonio Metro Area
  • Have access to a computer and a personal email account
  • Attend mandatory judge training
  • Agree to and follow the ATAC Judge Code of Ethics
  • Must not be a board member or artistic director of a participating ATAC theatre organization.

Ideal Candidates

We look for individuals who:

  • Are actively involved in the San Antonio theatre community
  • Have formal training or substantial theatrical experience (onstage or behind the scenes)

Judge Commitments

  • See and score at least 8 productions during the season
  • Participate consistently and fairly throughout the year
  • Avoid conflicts of interest and recuse when necessary
  • Follow all judging guidelines and uphold program standards

Participation is monitored throughout the season to ensure fairness and accountability.

Thank You

We appreciate your continued interest in serving the San Antonio theatre community.
Please check back in July if you’re interested in being considered for next season’s panel.
